Why an independent consultant ?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question 1 :

We have three proposals from different providers to construct a sewage treatment plant for our effluents. We are going to invest between 10 and 15 million dollar.

The three proposals differ in both engineering and costs.

How we know which is the best one ?

The correct answer:

Seek advice from an independent consultant.

Only an independent consultant can objectively compare the proposals and help you to take the right decision, because he/she does not have commercial interest with any provider.

Question 2 :

A provider ran a pilot plant to treat the effluents of our factory.
According to its report, the performance of the pilot was very good.

But we do not know to evaluate if the results were actually so good.
The full-scale treatment plant will cost 1 million dollar.

How can we know if the performance of the pilot was as good as the provider claims ?

The correct answer:

Seek advice from an independent consultant.

Only an independent consultant can objectively analyze the results of the pilot plant and help you to take the right decision, because he/she neither sells any equipment nor have commercial interest with any provider.

Question 3 :

The providers of sewage treatment equipment try to convince us that the solution for the effluents of our factory is a sewage treatment plant.

The providers of waste minimization equipment try to convince us that the solution is to reduce/eliminate the effluents by a proper waste minimization program.

Who can give us an objective advice ?

The correct answer:

Seek advice from an independent consultant.

Only an independent consultant can objectively analyze your industrial effluents and find the right solution, because he/she neither sells any equipment nor have commercial interest with any provider.

Definitions:

An independent consultant is one that does not sell any equipment or product but just know-how (consulting, design, studies, etc.).

A provider is a producer or vendor of equipment and products. It can also act as a consultant (some times by free ... if you buy its products).

Providers are generally more interested in selling their products than in solving the problems of the client.
If you want to minimize your investments and operational costs, or obtain an objective advice, a provider is a bad adviser.
